Berlin

After reviewing the conceptual design from 1997, based on which the central part of the complex was built (one building and a basement containing the garage), Bauprojekt designed the remaining five buildings, integrating the existing structure and creating a unified whole. This was also the biggest challenge – merging the newly designed buildings with the existing structure and parking.

DETAILS

The task was to design a mixed-use residential block in Berlin, adapted for people with disabilities.

The complex consists of six individual buildings that form a single entity.

  • The complex was designed according to German standards for accessibility, ensuring that every corner of the buildings is accessible and adapted for wheelchair users.
  • In addition to designing the buildings themselves, we also planned the landscaping of the entire complex. We envisioned two parks, one for younger children and one for older children, green areas with low and tall vegetation, a picnic zone, and more.
  • Despite the unusual requirements, the buildings were designed with spacious, functional apartments, parking spaces, and bike storage areas.

Integrating the newly designed buildings with the existing structure was a challenge, as the existing building had already incorporated vertical circulation (staircase), which was used for one of the newly designed buildings.

The existing building on the site did not fully meet the conditions and wishes of the investor, so changes were made to the floor height in the newly designed buildings. This height difference between the floors was resolved using ramps that bridge the height difference between the stairs and the elevator.

A combination of brick bands and “demit” facade was used, which blends with the surroundings and the existing building while introducing a touch of modernity.
